Strategy consultancy – research funding
The Economic and Social Research Council is the governing body through which all public research monies are channeled to UK university researchers. The chief executive asked us to assess the organisation's Five-Year Strategic Plan before it was presented to the ESRC's governing board. Under a tight deadline, we re-drafted the document, bringing more emphasis to bear on the seriousness of the 2007-8 financial crisis; its impact was still under-appreciated in both academia and government. As well as working up a new executive summary, which drew out the growing complexity of the economic and financial system, we provided a significant re-write to the section on Global Economic Policy and Management to better showcase the role ESRC-backed research could play in reshaping economic and financial governance. After board approval, the document was presented to senior UK government ministers and Whitehall officials and was later made available to the public.
